Vasque Velocity 2.0 Trail Runner: Tough Mudder-Worthy

The Good: Light and flexible for great performance during fast trail runs.

The Bad: The softer rubber that provides better grip seemed to wear faster than the other outsole rubber, this may limit the life of the shoe on rough terrain.

The Ugly: The substantial amount of muck I poured out of these shoes after the Tough Mudder. How did I not feel all that gravel?!

Aside from hydration, foot protection is one of the most important aspects when out chugging life on the trail.  Proper shoes protect from sharp rocks and roots, provide solid grip on uneven or loose terrain, and of course should make you look damn good while doing it. The Vasque Velocity 2.0 is a new update on a solid design, and they’re light, comfortable, and feel at home just about anywhere you want to be.

I put these shoes through the paces on trails, streets, and through a few creeks. I was sure to pound a few miles through them to make sure that I would be well-supported through the NorCal Tough Mudder. I was impressed with how quickly the materials drain water and dry out. The shoes felt soft and supportive right out of the box, with no break-in period necessary.  I hammered them on some tough local trails with plenty of protection and support for my recovering rolled ankle. In addition to trail running, the style of the shoe also works for light hiking and trips out to my field offices.

These shoes start out with a Mako rubber outsole for all-terrain grip with extra sticky pads on the toe and heel strike areas, providing excellent traction on the Mudder’s mostly wood obstacles. Every step is softened by a molded dual density footbed and a solid TPU footshank for added protection against rough trails.  Up top, the shoes are made from nubuck and synthetic Airmesh for fast drainage and drying after a creek crossing (or the Mudder’s ice bath obstacle, the Arctic Enema). The shoe is also available in a Gore-Tex waterproof version as well.

If you need the solid performance through a Tough Mudder Run, or want a dependable shoe for your weekly trail activities; the Vasque Velocity 2.0 is a solid candidate. After the beating I’ve dealt out, they’re still performing mile after mile.
