Arc’Terxy Visio FL Jacket $300

The Good: Über lightweight shell provides exceptional protection from the elements. The no bounce hip pocket is a-mazing.

The Bad: No real insulation, so layer up in extreme conditions.

The Ugly: My massive headache from the cold after forgetting a beanie.

Running in the winter is not the most pleasant experience without the right gear. Layering up with a cotton hoodie and throwing a thick jacket over it won’t even get you around the block before sweats and chills stop you cold. So grab the right gear and you can make the miles happen. First you need to get a moisture-wicking under layer. Keeping your skin dry will fend off the chills.

After you’ve dealt with that, lace up those kicks and pull on the Arc’Teryx Visio FL jacket. This jacket is light and form fitting; a minimal runners jacket with just enough storage for the essentials.  The hip pocket is interesting, packed with keys and an iPhone it barely bounced no matter how strenuously I ran. Other features include a few thin reflective strips on the hips and elbows, and super thin laminated cuff adjusters.

I took this jacket on plenty of miles of cold, wet, and nasty terrain. The shell packed down nice and compact when I didn’t want it and pulled right out when I needed the added protection. It shed water like crazy, didn’t bind up, and fit like a glove. Worn by itself, it was soft against the skin thanks to the Gore-Tex™ Active fabric and worn over a layer it still stayed warm and breathable. The half collar was compact and didn’t rub my neck as I ran. The material does have a “swish” to it that can get either annoying or rhythmic depending on that beat in your head.

So go out there are get active with the right gear and the weather will just be part of the adventure.  Don’t forget to cover up that noggin to avoid brain freeze – it’s cold out there.
