Maui Jim Hot Sands Polarized Sunglasses $190
The Good: Polarized lens makes colors pop, quality design is durable and stylish, lightweight frames are great for high intensity sports.
The Bad: Your $10 gas station sunglasses will never be good enough again.
The Awesome: The world you never knew existed past the glare off the water.
I first found myself looking through a set of Maui Jim sunglasses in Napili, on the North end of Maui. It was a fitting place to experience the jaw dropping glare reduction that high quality polarized lenses provide. As the glare dropped away, I was able to see a school of Sea Turtles playing in the waves that had been invisible to me a few seconds earlier. It was at that point true polarized glasses became a useable technology to me.
Maui Jim has been providing some of the most innovative and high performance polarized sunglasses in the market for years, and the Hot Sands are a testament to that. The light and durable polycarbonate lenses cut the glare, block harmful UV rays, and boost the color spectrum for brighter more vibrant colors. The featherlight frames are flexible and coated to shed water, sweat, and grease. They flex when impacted, and have a bit of rubber holding power at the temples to stay on during activities.
We tested these glasses on the water during wet kayak runs, punishing pavement runs, and general day to day use over the course of a spring month in Northern California. The glasses were dunked, folded, and generally abused daily with no indication of wear. The lenses and frames shed water, sweat residue wiped right off , and they felt as comfortable at the end of every adventure as they did at the beginning. The glasses held on tight enough to never worry about losing them, but were soft enough to avoid temple pressure after a few hours of use. The glare reduction was consistent and impressive, revealing fish, hidden water hazards, and even helped to keep track of the ball when golfing.
So if you have the need for a pair of sunglasses that fight back against the sun’s relentless glare, the Hot Sands are a sporty option. Of course with a price tag like this, make sure you’re ready to keep them safe when they’re not on your noggin.
