Patagonia Houdini Windbreaker $100

The Good: Lightweight, slim fit, and packs down to an incredible small stashable package.

The Bad: Saving on weight means sacrificing features, the pocket is small enough to be just about useless. Not a very breathable jacket.

The Awesome: My svelt iPhone 4 weighs almost an ounce (.8) more than this jacket.

Going on an early run always has that moment, dress warm enough to enjoy the journey but try not to overheat. Layering is a great way to regulate body heat, but carting around bulky layers 3 miles in is just no bueno. To protect against wind, and the occasional drizzle, the patagonia Houdini windbreaker is there when needed, but stashes away small when things heat up. A major aspect of this jacket is the distinct lack of features, which saves on bulk and weight. The lightweight (4 oz)  hooded layer has a small chest pocket that doubles as the stuff pack, along with a low-profile cinch on the hood and at the waist. Simple elastic wrist cuffs keep the jacket from migrating too much.

We tested this jacket on early morning runs during the spring, braving a few thunderstorms when they appeared, but stashing quickly when the sun popped back out. While the jacket offers no added insulation against the elements, the wind and rain barrier was exceptional. Packed down, it slipped into a set of running shorts without bulk or bouncing.  The nylon ripstop fabric felt durable enough to stand up to use, but didn’t breath very well when humidity kicked up.

Overall, this jacket is a piece of gear that can be stashed into just about any backpack for sudden thunderstorm protection anywhere your feet may wander.
