Salomon XR Shift Trail Running Shoe $100
The Good: Hybrid shoe that performs well on the pavement and out in the dirt.
The Bad: Takes a minute to get used to the secure fit. You might feel like they’re too narrow, but just stick with it.
The Awesome: Hybridity is hard. Too often you just get a product that does two things poorly. But Salomon nails it with the XR Shift. A real two for one.
My wife and I just had our first baby. That means three things.
- We’re totally smitten.
- We’re completely exhausted.
- More time spent taking care of our little one means less time out exercising.
I’m actually writing this review on my couch while I rock our little one in her basinet with my feet. My wife is in the bedroom trying to get a couple hours of sleep. Later this afternoon I’m gonna sneak in run to try and shake off my daddy hangover and I’m excited because I’ll be using the Salomon’s XR Shift shoes. They’re a hybrid shoe meant for what the company calls “door-to-trail.” That means I can head out my front door, use them on the pavement but also get in a little dirt while I’m out. No need to get in my car and waste 15 minutes by driving to the trail. Efficiency. It’s the name of the game for me from now on.
The shoes have an 11-millimeter drop so they’re a good choice for heel strikers. I never fully got on the minimalism bandwagon and have always appreciated a well-padded shoe, especially out on the pavement. For the trail there’s plenty of toe protection and while the lugs are fairly low, the shoe still tears through rocks and dirt. I’ve never been a big fan of Salomon’s Quicklace one pull tightening system so I was glad to see the XR Shifts come with regular shoe laces.
It took me a minute to get used to the secure fit of these shoes and for a while I wondered if they weren’t meant for people with medium to wide feet. But over time I came to appreciate how snug they are, especially out in the dirt and rocks.
With the XR Shifts, Salomon is catering to people who want to save time and have the convenience of starting their exercise routine right at their front door. I’m guessing they didn’t have new dads in mind. Nonetheless, I’m a beneficiary and really appreciate the innovative thinking.
