Topo Athletic RX Trainers 7.8oz, $110; topoathletic.com
The Good: Zero heel-toe drop for stability on lifts and 14mm stack height for protection during running WODs.
The Bad: Not for people who hate things between their toes.
The Ugly: Personally, I like the ninja look, but it’s not for everyone.
As the name implies, Topo’s RX trainers are built for crossfitters, and apparently, they’ve been designed by someone who’s done a WOD or two. The evidence is in the details: the laces are held down with a Velcro strap to keep them from coming undone during rope climbs (the strap’s meant to provide midfoot support, but I dug the lace management); the rubber rand around the toebox was a lifesaver during doubleups, and the 7mm midsole gave just enough cushion during the run portion of “Helen.” Bonus: The zero-drop profile and split toe design gave an extremely stable platform during heavy squats.
