Howler Bros. Hybrid Shorts - $65
Howler Bros. Loggerhead Longsleeve - $65
Howler Bros. has been a favorite brand of ours for years. That’s partially because of the excellent monkey face icon, but mostly because their gear is built for adventure and it looks damn good. Here’s a highlight of a few pieces of gear we took along during our summer hiking reviews -
The Shorts:
The type of adventures we tend to find ourselves on require gear good enough to keep up with the fun. With plenty of mud, hail, and brush the shorts had plenty of time in the wild. We hammered these shorts in just about every way imaginable, running, hiking, even through lightning and hail in Utah. The quick-drying nylon ripstop material shed water and dirt fast, looking just as good after the hikes. With a trim fit and easy to reach pockets, the shorts were as useful as they were stylish. The best unexpected feature in these shorts was the cell phone pocket on the outer thigh, it fit a full sized smartphone in case with room to move. These shorts have found a permanent place in any adventure we take on, especially if water is in the cards.
The Shirt:
Keeping warm in the wild sometimes mean bulky gear, but this technical shirt is a smooth-as-butter fit for layering or just hanging out by the fire. The 100% polyester is moisture wicking, quick-dry, and with SPF 45 protection it minimizes the slimy sunscreen issue. Stylish features include thumb holes, a sunglass-cleaning microfiber hip pocket, and a 2-button henley collar; because looking good is definitely part of having fun. As a solid base layer, the soft fabric was thin enough to fit well under a jacket. The shirt was well ventilated, and didn’t hold onto trail stink after a few hard days. While the shirt was comfortable during light evenings, it’s too thin to offer a huge amount of warmth on cold nights by itself.
Overall, this technical clothing held up to an extreme amount of abuse on the trails, and even survived every day life without breaking down or staining up. Expect years of good looking, great performing clothes that won’t slow you down out there.
