No, you’re not watching an SNL sketch, this is a real product and believe it or not… it works!
It’s not a secret and many athletes and trainers use cucumber brine regularly to help eliminate and prevent muscle cramps. In fact, here’s a quote from NOLA.com:
One explanation is that certain types of exercise-associated muscle cramping are caused by muscle fatigue. The nerves that usually keep muscles from over-contracting start to malfunction, and the muscle “bunches” when it should relax. The theory is that pickle juice — and likely the vinegar component of pickle juice — activates nerve receptors in the throat or stomach that send out nerve signals that somehow stop the malfunctioning in the muscle.
Now, keep in mind that you shouldn’t drink a lot of it on account of the sodium contents. However, a couple ounces before exercise (as conveniently provided in the pocket sized bottle), and you might avoid a spot of trouble. One thing to keep in mind is that if you do drink it cold as suggested in the video, follow it up with something hot. You don’t want to lose precious heat in cold environments.
It is literally pickle juice, and it works.
But not made with pickles?
If you like real ingredients, note that the only thing you’ll find on the label is “natural flavors.” Now, it may just be that because there’s no actual pickles in the “juice,” it’s not legal to list it as an ingredient. However, the producers could say “made with real pickles” or something similar.
